Food pantry expands as area needs increase

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network food pantry plans to open a newly acquired facility, which means increased services for the needy. The new location, on Route 209 in Brodheadsville, allows the network to expand its food and clothing pantries, while offering space to similar non-profits.

The alleged shooter, Nicolaus Harman, 20, of East Stroudsburg waived his right to a preliminary hearing Monday. He was charged with two counts of attempt to commit criminal homicide, four counts of aggravated assault, robbery by inflicting serious injury, theft, conspiracy, and possession of a prohibited firearm.

The 12th Annual Run for Red Pocono Marathon kicked off Sunday in Stroudsburg, taking participants across a nearly 30 mile trek through the Poconos. Stepping off at Pocono Mountain West High School, the event was held to raise money for the American Red Cross.

Already charged by Monroe County authorities with hundreds of counts of sexual offenses against two boys, a former Stroudsburg youth wrestling coach is now charged also by authorities in Georgia, where he allegedly committed additional offenses against the boys. As of Friday, Ron Gorman, 51, of Marietta, Ga., and formerly of Stroud Township, was still incarcerated in Monroe County Correctional Facility in lieu of $1 million bail .

After a six-year hiatus, the band's concert Tuesday at Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg showed there's still interest in the band, as a near-sellout crowd of perhaps 1,500 filled the theater and responded enthusiastically to the band. It also showed how good some of pop-punk was, as songs such as “The Anthem,” “Girls & Boys” and “Lifestyles of the Rich and the Famous” still not only were as catchy as when they were released 15 years ago, but still sounded good.

Police found 87 bags of heroin in a woman's bra and five more bags in her boyfriend's jeans Wednesday morning on North Green Street in East Stroudsburg. Karen Kemmerer, 33, and boyfriend Joshua LaBar, 27, are charged with possession with intent to deliver and other offenses.

Stroudsburg mayor signs in support of Planned Parenthood

A bipartisan group of 106 mayors from 28 states, including Stroudsburg's Mayor Tarah D. Probst and 16 others from Pennsylvania, have signed a letter to congressional leaders opposing efforts to “defund” Planned Parenthood, according to the family planning organization. “Defunding Planned Parenthood would have a devastating effect, preventing millions of people with Medicaid coverage from accessing basic health care including birth control and cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood health centers,” said the letter, dated Wednesday.

District Justice Richard Claypool arraigned an East Stroudsburg couple and one Beaver Meadows man Thursday on charges they conspired to manufacture and distribute heroin in Monroe County. Michael Blas, 32, of East Stroudsburg, his wife Lacy Martin, 29, also of East Stroudsburg and Daniel Novak, 36, of Beaver Meadows were charged with possession and conspiracy with the intent to deliver about 15 bricks of heroin.
